The process of forming habits is simple: we make a decision, act on it, act on it until we have created a pattern, then use and reuse that pattern so that it becomes a structure - a structure we depend upon. Have you ever tried to break a habit? If you have you have had a very real experience of the discovering the hidden structure it became. The structure remains invisible when we are 'in the flow' of the pattern, but once you decide to interrupt that flow the pattern becomes apparent. That structure is formidable and very resistant to change!
Culture change in organizations bumps up against this. If the habits of mind in the organization are not addressed, then the hidden structures of belief will take over and kill the budding change. In my own healing experience this was also true. My fleeting, but continuous thoughts and emotions about a certain interaction with my then husband formed the 'structure' that became my cancerous tumor. Our simpler beliefs (I can't dance, I can't speak before people, I can't trust myself) all are other kinds of structures that limit our behavior and define the context of our lives.
Seeing these habits for what they are - self created beliefs - gives us the power to make incredible changes fairly quickly. Many of the stories in Radical Remissions come from people who have made a different decision and in so doing they have gone from sickness to health, some in a remarkably short time!
Visions become real when habits of mind are realigned in concert with the vision. Visions remain wishful thinking when the work of changing habits of mind is not undertaken. Seeing our habits of mind and how they impact our life often needs outside input. this input can come from a spouse (and often does), but can be more easily welcomed from a chosen coach or mentor. The world itself will give us feedback as Spirit moves to bring experiences that highlight this dissonance, but we often blame the messenger instead of hearing the message.
This is our challenge now, at this time - to see how our habits of mind are creating our life. this enables us to make real choices about the kind of life and world we want to live in and the kind of person we want to be. Start now - engage a coach, find a mentor - and change your habits of mind!
